The Circumstance:

Around 2:00 a.m., Trooper Ricks had stopped a vehicle on Interstate 26 eastbound near mile marker 166 in Orangeburg. When he walked back to his patrol vehicle, the driver of a box truck struck him. He was transported to Trident Medical Center in North Charleston, suffering from severe brain injury, internal injuries, and broken bones in his back. The driver was charged with operating a vehicle under suspension.

“We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming outpouring of love, prayers, and condolences during this time of grief,” the family said in a statement. ”Your words, gestures, and support have been a source of comfort."

“As we honor Dennis, I just ask everyone to please slow down and move over for emergency vehicles,” she said. “My husband would still be here, if everyone could do that. Please give these men and women the space to work safely. That’s one way that we can remember him.”

Undersheriff Brandon Gaede, 30 years old, was shot and killed on June 27, 2025 while arresting a subject.

           The Circumstance:

After receiving a call about loud booms and explosions around 6:00 p.m., responding officers were unable to find the source but cleared the area. At 8:30 p.m., Undersheriff Gaede responded to the scene after three more calls were made. When he encountered a subject outside his house, the man denied setting off fireworks.

Another call came in regarding explosives at 9:18, and Undersheriff Gaede was immediately on the scene and found the same subject in his yard and smoke nearby. The man admitted to setting off explosives, not commercial-grade fireworks, a felony in Kansas. While placing the subject in handcuffs, the man pulled out a concealed handgun and shot Undersheriff Gaede five times. He returned fire, killing the subject.

At the funeral, family members remembered Gaede not only as a dedicated officer but as a husband, father, and friend.

“Brandon is my son. He wasn’t just my son-in-law,” said his mother-in-law. “I watched him every day take care of my daughter and then these three kids when they came along.”

“For five years, I got to work with Brandon,” said Gaede’s father-in-law. “During that time, I not only found out what an amazing man he was, but I got to see what kind of law enforcement officer this kid was.”

Give Blue Hope is excited to announce Tiffany Yant has joined the organization as an Administrative Assistant and Family Outreach Coordinator.

Tiffany initially became aware of GBH through the tragic passing of her father, Officer Ross Bartlett of the Ceresco Police Department in Nebraska, who was also a NDCS investigator and a member of the Ceresco Volunteer Fire Department.

Here is Tiffany's story in her own words:

"My name is Tiffany Yant, and I am the proud daughter of Fallen Police Officer Ross Bartlett.

On April 12th, 2024, my dad put on his badge, his gun, and his vest. He kissed my mom goodbye and told her he loved her. Then he walked out the door—and he never came back. Just a few miles from our home, my father was tragically killed

in the line of duty. That day, our world shattered. Life was divided into before and after. One senseless act stole a man of honor, a husband, a father, a protector. Since that unimaginable day, I’ve wrestled with questions no one should have to

ask. How does over three decades of public service and selfless duty end in such tragedy? How do I raise my children in a world that can be so cruel?

I am a COPS kid—I grew up bleeding blue. As a child, I resented it. Everyone knew my dad. No place was anonymous. But now, I wear that legacy like armor. With pride. With love.

As an adult, you know your parents won’t live forever. But nothing prepares you for what it means to lose a parent in the line of duty. No one prepares you for the trauma families endure—not just grief, but the heavy obligations thrust upon us

in the name of honor, duty, and sacrifice.

In my grief, I searched for meaning—for a way to carry forward his legacy. That’s when Give Blue Hope found us. Just weeks after my father’s death, they extended our family a $15,000 donation—no red tape, no death certificate, no questions asked. It took 16 weeks to receive the death certificate. 18 weeks for his final paycheck. 32 weeks for life insurance. 45 weeks for workers’ comp. 60 weeks for state benefits. And the federal Public Safety Officer's Benefits? Still waiting. Maybe three years, maybe more.

But Give Blue Hope was there. In two weeks. When we had nothing but heartbreak, they showed up with compassion and resources. My mom went from two incomes to one in a matter of minutes. That gift helped keep us afloat. It meant more than words could ever explain.

Of all the organizations that reached out—and there were many—Give Blue Hope was the only one that acted immediately and asked for nothing in return. That moment ignited a fire in me. Since that day, I’ve felt a calling—a need to walk

beside other families who’ve faced the same nightmare. This is how I carry on my dad’s legacy. This is how I honor his sacrifice. I can be a light in someone else’s darkness. I can say with truth and tenderness, “I know what you’re going

           through.”

In April 2025, I accepted a part-time position with Give Blue Hope as an Administrative Assistant and Family Outreach Coordinator.

For the first time since my dad died, I feel whole again. I have purpose. I have direction. And through Give Blue Hope, I’m turning my grief into something that matters—something that helps others survive the unimaginable."

Deputy Sheriff Hector Cuevas, 36, was killed on March 17th, 2025 when his patrol car struck a pole at the intersection of El Evado and Seneca roads just before 11 a.m.

Deputy Cuevas was in pursuit of a stolen vehicle that had been reported to the department just minutes earlier. During the high-speed chase, Deputy Sheriff Cuevas' vehicle collided with another car and then a nearby power pole. The impact of the crash split the patrol vehicle in half, critically injuring Deputy Sheriff Cuevas. Although first responders rushed to administer aid, he passed away at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“He was a cop’s cop,” Sheriff Shannon Dicus shared. “The kind of law enforcement officer we all strive to be — a man who could engage with a hardened gang member one moment and reassure a frightened child the next.”

Hector’s dedication extended beyond the badge. He was an active member of his church and a beloved football coach in Rialto, having mentored young athletes at Carter High School. He also played for the San Bernardino Spartans, a team of local law enforcement and firefighters.

Officer Jeremy LaBonte, 24, was shot and killed while responding to a suspicious person reported at a shopping center at 1425 Market Blvd in Roswell around 7:15 p.m.

           The Circumstance:

Officer LaBonte found the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Edward Espinoza, in the parking lot near the ACE Pickleball Club. According to police, Espinoza shot Labonte multiple times.

He encountered Officer Labonte responding to the scene and spoke to the officer for a few seconds, then drew a handgun and shot him twice.

"At that point the defendant walks carefully around, leaning over and fires more than a dozen shots into the fallen officer," the prosecution said. "He leaves the gun there and then he runs away with his arms held high."

They also alleged that when Espinoza was arrested on Feb. 7, he gave a lucid interview with police and acknowledged shooting Officer Labonte. They further said he had used a so-called " ghost gun," one without a serial number, in the shooting.

"If he can find and purchase that kind of thing on the internet, he doesn't need to be released, he's got the mental capacity to handle the Fulton County Jail," the prosecution said.

“We join them, his fellow Roswell PD, and all law enforcement in mourning this sudden and heartbreaking loss, and we ask all Georgians to join us in keeping them in your thoughts and prayers,” Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement. “We also ask that we remain mindful of the heavy sacrifices law enforcement and their families make to keep all of us safe each and every day. May this courageous man’s memory inspire all of us in the days, weeks, and years ahead.”

Officer Labonte had served with the Roswell Police Department for over three years. He is survived by his wife, son, parents, two sisters, nephew, and grandparents. Labonte’s wife told Atlanta News First that he was killed four days before going on vacation. She also said the pair met in middle school.

Upon hearing about the tragic line of duty death of Officer LaBonte, Give Blue Hope reached out to the Roswell Police Department.

At approximately 4:00 p.m. on December 6, 2023, Peter Simon was operating a pickup truck eastbound on Totten Pond Road in Waltham when he pulled to the side of the road and suddenly turned back into the roadway striking a vehicle traveling eastbound.

He then continued driving forward for approximately a quarter mile before fatally striking Waltham Police Officer Paul Tracey and Roderick Jackson. After striking the victims the defendant continued on, striking multiple other vehicles before abandoning his truck and fleeing on foot.

The defendant subsequently encountered another Waltham officer who had responded to the scene, and allegedly pulled a knife on the officer before stealing his police cruiser and again fleeing. The suspect crashed the cruiser on Winter Street before he was arrested by a Waltham Police Officer.

           From Officer Treacy's obituary:

"On February 25, 1996 Paul was appointed to the City of Waltham Police Department as a Patrolman. His love for people and helping others allowed him to thrive as a Police Officer. He would use his people skills to navigate the difficulty of the job. Helping the youth of the community and in so many special ways cared for the elderly. He treated everyone that he encountered with the respect and dignity they deserved."

After hearing about the tragic events and the line of duty of Officer Paul Tracey, Give Blue Hope reached out to the Waltham Police Department spokesperson.

After receiving information about the incident, Give Blue Hope was fortunate to send the family of Officer Paul Tracey a charitable gift of money to help them purchase food or pay bills. These families need this time to grieve instead of stressing over their financial loss. Officer Tracey left behind a wife and 2 children.

Sergeant Michael Abbate, 37, and Trooper Alberto Felix, 54, were struck and killed by an impaired driver off Interstate 15 near D Street in Las Vegas. Both had stopped to check on a driver who appeared to be sleeping in his car. Another vehicle struck them and fled the scene. One officer died at the scene and the other at the hospital.

Abbate was killed along with his partner Trooper Alberto Felix early on Nov. 30 after they stopped to help a parked motorist on the side of Interstate 15 near D Street and a man drove into both of them and fled the scene.

Hours later, the Metropolitan Police Department arrested Jemarcus Williams, 46, who is charged with two counts each of DUI, failing to stop at the scene of a crash, reckless driving resulting in death, and misdemeanor counts of speeding, failing to properly approach a traffic incident and failing to decrease speed.

"I wanted to get here early," Benjamin Soroudi said. "You've got all the sights and the sounds. Everybody is here to support. Seeing the traffic signs on the freeway that support Sgt. Abbate, that's awesome."

Soroudi said he and Sgt. Abbate met around 2005 when they were in the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at UNLV. He said Sgt. Abbate always made him and others laugh.

"Everyone should show their support for him," Carl Lindsey, who did not know Sgt. Abbate but attended the funeral with his wife said. "I have to show support with my wife and to my son, who is a Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper, that the community and his family has his support, and that we will always be there for him and his partners."

Trooper Alberto Felix, 54, and Sergeant Michael Abbate, 37, were struck and killed by an impaired driver off Interstate 15 near D Street in Las Vegas. Both had stopped to check on a driver who appeared to be sleeping in his car. Another vehicle struck them and fled the scene. One officer died at the scene and the other at the hospital. The subject was apprehended six hours later.

On November 11, 2023, the Austin Police Department responded to a domestic violence call in South Austin. Hostages were barricaded inside a home, and only one of them was able to escape.

Patrol officers had initially responded to the residence for a domestic violence call involving a stabbing shortly before 3:00 am. Arriving officers located an injured victim outside of the home and learned there were two more injured victims inside. As the officers attempted to enter the home to rescue the victims, the subject inside opened fire, causing the officers to retreat.

The agency's SWAT team arrived at the scene and attempted a hostage rescue at about 4:30 am. The subject opened fire on the SWAT team, fatally wounding Officer Pastore and wounding a second officer. The officers returned fire, killing him.

On September 16, 2023, Kevin Eduardo Cataneo Salazar allegedly followed Clinkunbroomer just before 6 p.m. as he left the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Palmdale Station while on duty, to the intersection on Sierra Highway, less than one block away from the station.

Salazar allegedly ambushed and fatally shot Clinkunbroomer from the driver seat of his own vehicle then sped away. A good Samaritan stopped and found the deputy wounded inside of his SUV, then ran a short distance to the Palmdale Station to seek help. Responding deputies rushed Clinkunbroomer to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Law enforcement officials sought assistance from the public in their exhaustive efforts to find the individual responsible for murdering Clinkunbroomer. After an intensive manhunt and a four-hour standoff, Salazar was found and arrested around 5 a.m. on September 18 at his Palmdale residence.

“We are devastated by the brutal murder of Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer and share in the grief with his family, partners, and community as we try to grapple with this tragedy,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

“Deputy Clinkunbroomer was in uniform, stopped at a red light in his patrol vehicle like thousands of other law enforcement officers and deputies do every day when he tragically lost his life while serving his community. Deputy Clinkunbroomer embodied a legacy of service that was instilled in him through several generations. Our detectives and personnel worked relentlessly for thirty-six hours to locate and arrest the suspect responsible for Ryan’s murder and we support the charges that were filed today. We expect the maximum punishment available under the law for the murder of Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer.”

           The Circumstance:

On September 13th, 2023, Cram was killed at about 8 pm when he told 43-year-old Kyle Ricke he was going to be arrested. Ricke allegedly shot Cram with a handgun; autopsy photos presented during the trial showed that Officer Cram was shot eight times.

Cram was on patrol Sept. 13, 2023, when he learned of an arrest warrant for Kyle Ricke on a charge of harassment. The officer saw Ricke and told him he would be arrested. That’s when Ricke shot him, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. Cram had been with Algona PD since 2015. He was 33.

A jury in Dickinson County took about an hour in July to convict Ricke of first-degree murder. The mandatory sentence in Iowa is life behind bars without parole.

"After he was on the ground, defenseless, you put three more bullets in his back. That is the very definition of a yellow-back shooting coward, and that is you. Even after that act of cowardice was done, you got in your pickup and ran away," said Kevin Cram's father, Mark, at sentencing.

"When they had his autopsy pictures up, you were staring at the floor. You put eight bullets in him, but you weren't able to even look at the damage you caused. Those pictures are forever in our memories. Your name is attached to 46 court records in one capacity or another. At the time you killed Kevin, you were 43 years old. Obviously, you didn't learn from your mistakes like a normal person does.”

Curtis explained to the Algona Police Department Human Resource Officer that Give Blue Hope exists and was here to help the family during the time of loss.

Curtis explained that the charitable gift of money came from donations nationwide. Because of these wonderful donations Give Blue Hope is able to provide a charitable gift to them. The charitable gift could be spent on food, paying immediate bills or even a mortgage payment, if that's what was needed at the time. The charitable gift does not need to be paid back

23-year-old Jake Wallin was a police officer for the Fargo Police Department in Fargo, Minnesota. He was shot and killed when responding to a traffic accident in the area of 9th Avenue South and 25th Street South which ultimately turned violent.

           The Circumstance:

Wallin was killed when a man armed with 1,800 rounds of ammunition, multiple guns and explosives ambushed officers responding to a routine traffic crash. Two other officers and a civilian were wounded before a fourth officer returned fire, killing gunman Mohamad Barakat.

“He served his country, came back here and wanted nothing more but to serve in a position with purpose and meaning — his exact words — and he did that,” Fargo Police Chief David Zibolski said.

“His final act of valor was to selflessly face the shooter and attempt to neutralize him to save others,” Zibolski said. “His actions were valorous and exemplify the highest standards of the policing profession.”

Evidence suggests instead that Barakat came upon the crash by “happenstance” and his ensuing ambush was a diversion from his much bigger intended target, Wrigley said.

GBH was alerted to the incident the day that it occurred. President Curtis DeBerg reached out to the Fargo, North Dakota Police Department.

Curtis shared the mission with the Fargo Police Departments Resource Officer and advised them that Give Blue Hope would like to send a charitable gift of money to the fiancé of Officer Wallin.

It is moments like these that the families need to know that communities across the nation are supporting them in their darkest hours.
